1.     Introduction

                 Highwavys Town Panchayat coming under the administrative territory of Uttamapalayam Taluk, Theni District. This Town constituted in the year of 1996 Grade Town Panchayat. In the year 1983 Director of Town Panchayat Proceeding No 29682/82 J5,

dates: 04.02.1983 constituted as Selection Grade. This Town Panchayat is coming under municipal Act from the year 1996. In the year 11.6.2004 wide G.O.No.270 Date. 04.06.2004 It as called Special Village Panchayat. Again on 14.7.2006 wide G.O.No.55 date14.7.2006 as Town Panchayat. This Town limit 9596.58 acres water Catchments Lake . So there is no water scarcity in this town. The town panchayat total area is 46.48 sq.km. 2.750 km of roads has been maintained by town panchayat.

This city population is in 1991 Cense 13091 as for 2001 Cense 7016 present population is 4882 Total No.of Assisment 1910 Total No.wards 15. 

3.     Tourist attractions

 

Meghamalai, popularly called Highwavy Mountains, is a cool and misty mountain range situated in the Western Ghats in Theni district, Tamilnadu, South India. It is a place of natural beauty dotted with cardamom plantations and tea estates. The place is situated at an elevation of 1,500 m above sea level and it is rich in flora and fauna. This area, now mostly planted with tea, includes Cloudlands, Highwavys and Manalaar estates, the access to which is now largely restricted. It still includes large untouched remnants of evergreen forest.

This town has a fairly healthy climate. The maximum temperature normally occurs in the month of June while the minimum temperature in winter occurs in December.

 

 

4.     Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary

 

There is a long-pending proposal with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department to establish the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary on 600 km² of forest in the division. Priority tasks in the sanctuary should be the control of poaching and the use of pesticides, the elimination of ganja (Cannabis sativa) and the cultivation and scientific management of watersheds. The Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary can be an excellent buffer to the Periyar Tiger Reserve and Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary and can immensely strengthen conservation in the southern Western Ghats, the range of hills south of the Palakkad Gap.

 

5.     Tea estates

 

Highwavys is a view point that will afford a wonderful view of the entire mountains range of Varusanadu Hills. There few large private tea, spices and coffee plantations all around, notable include The Highwavys Estates owned by The Woodbriar Group, Ananda Plantations, Ponsiva Plantations and Feildmede Estate have the largest holdings of plantations in Meghamalai, an artificial lake and plenty of scope for making leisurely walks. Kardana Coffee Estate is situated in the High Wavy Mountains at 9°42′N 77°24′E.



6.     Dams

 

Six dams on the hill and originating place of Suruli Theertham (Suruli falls near Cumbum town) are popular attractions for tourists. From Manalar dam, one can view the deep Cumbum Valley and the villages of Theni district. The Department of Tourism has planned to introduce boat or ferry service to enable tourists to enjoy the pristine beauty of the hill.


7.     Forests

 

The places, Upper manalaru, Maharaja mettu and Iravangalaru are fringed by forests with rich flora and fauna.



8.     Vellimalai

Vellimalai (Silver Mountain, 1,650 m) area is a heart of Meghamalai. Silver-lined clouds seem to rest gently on green hilltops and nestled somewhere in this region is the place where the river Vaigai originates. This lovely place will give an opportunity to see wild animals and aesthetically and scientifically managed tea gardens. this is near periyar tiger reserve.

9.     Travellers Bungalow

 

A good maintained rooms with 24 hrs water service, one Dining hall and one Bed room (carry Two beds) with attached Indian Toilet and Western Toilet. These rooms are maintained by Highways Town Panchayat.


10.            Inspection & Western Ghats Cottage.

 

It belongs to Highwavys Inspection Bungalow, having three separate rooms with two beds and one dinning Hall.  It’s located very near Highways dam.
