KARAMADAI (SELECTION GRADE) TOWN PANCHAYAT

COIMBATORE DISTRICT

1.1 Town History

                        KARAMADAI Town Panchayat is a Selection Grade Town Panchayat. The extent of the Town Panchayat is 19.827 Sq.km. The population of the town was 35166 in 2011 Census. The Town was delineated to 18 Administratiive  wards. KARAMADAI Town Panchayat is located at a distance of 28 kilometers north  of Coimbatore  on the Nagapattinam – Gudalur  State highway.  KARAMADAI Town  Panchayat was constituted in 1922 as per G.O (MS)  No 77/ 22  dated 26.02.1922.Further  it was upgraded as Town Panchayat from 01.09.1950.  It  was upgraded to Selection Grade from 30.03.1966, and functioning as such till date.

1.2  Habitations

                        This Town Panchayat is covering of 11 habitation for following are.

1.Karamadai, 2.Kuttaiyur, 3.Ayarbadi, 4.Vadamangalakarai, 5.Thenmangalakarai, 6.Mangalakaraipudur, 7.T. G . Pudur, 8.Kodasanur, 9.Periyathottipalyam,10.Kulathupalayam, 11.Patticakarampalayam

1.3 Political Wing

                        The Panchayat council the Political arm of the Town consists of 18 directly elected councillors each representing a ward. The Chairman heads  the Town Panchayat council which performs its duties as per the provisions envisaged in District Municipalities Act 1920.  The Political wing provides direction to the Town Panchayat Administration and performs its functions through a set of committees constituted for different purposes.

1.4 Executive Wing

                        The Executive wing is responsible for day to day operations of the Town Panchayat and is headed by the Executive Officer.  The Executive Officer is the Administrative head of the Town Panchayat and is supported by different departments in the operations and maintenance.  The Organizational structure comprises of Four functional department.

1.6 Transport Linkage

                        The State Highway connects this town with other areas with the road network. The major corridors are

I)  KARAMADAI Town Panchayat  - Sirumgai  Road, ii) KARAMADAI Town Panchayat  -  Annur  Road

iii) KARAMADAI Town Panchayat -  Manjoor  Road.

                        The ` C ` Class Municipal Bus stand  is having  10 nos of bus bays in an area of 2.43  acres.  In this Bus stand 45 Nos of Route Buses, 179 Nos  of  Mofussil Buses and 34 Town buses plying through the town touching the Bus stand.  Bus facilities are available to various places and continuously from this town. 

1.7 Climate Condition

                  The temperature here is cool and humid throughout the year because of the location, viz., foothill of Nilgris,  except during summer.  The average rainfall is 50cm  in a year. 

1.8 Soil Condition

                  KARAMADAI Town Panchayat comprises One revenue village namely KARAMADAI TOWN”. This Town  is covered with    hardrock soil.. Major  portion is covered by rocky area.    In general, One third of the town profile, the soil in and around the town is of fertile nature and is good for agriculture purposes.
2. Historical Importance and Major Festival

                        The Car Festivals associated with the presiding deity have great significance. The Car festival is the most outstanding of them and draws devotes in thousands from many places. Special train are run from Coimbatore to Karamadai and back on this occasion. Buses too with special trips ply between Coimbatore to Karamadai during the festival

. 

                        The Car festival is closely connected with the ceremonies popularly known as ‘Thanneer Sevai‘ ‘Kavala Sevai‘ and ‘Panda Sevai’ which have intimate relations with the orgin of the deity representing respectively the water poured on it, and the torches carried by the search party. These ceremonies follow closely on the heel of the deity’s mounting the car.
