THENGAMPUTHOOR TOWN PANCHAYAT PROFILE 

Location

Thengamputhoor  is a first grade Town Panchayat which is  9 Kilometers from Nagerkoil which is in Agastheeswaram Taluk of Kanyakumari District Administration.  Through this Town Panchayat  Mankudy - Nagecoil State Highways Road runs, which is linked by NH – 7 and NH – 47.  The area of the town Panchayat is 4.15 Sq.km.  Thengamputhoor Panchayat is bounded by  Puthalam Town Panchayat  on the south – east & south - west,  Parakkai village panchayat on the north - east,  Athikattuvilai & Dharmapuram village panchayats on the west.

 Physical Characteristics    

Major part of the town is plane area.  Hard red gravelly soil is found almost on all areas.  This town has perennial water sources from Parakkai Pond and there by agricultural activities are depending on this channel and also rainfall.  Trees like coconut,  plantain, and food grains like rice are the major crops of this town.  The climate is almost dry and there is significant rainfall during the southwest monsoon.

 Density

The total extent of the town is 4.15 Sq.km in the last three decades with a population of 12675 (2001).  Population density in this context workout to 7.25 persons per hectare area.

 Economic Base and employment structure

The economic base of this town is fully agricultural activities.  Floating population regarding the industrial related activities grown in a dramatic manner.


Land Use Pattern

It is observed that commercial areas are along the Manakudy - Nagercoil Highways Road only.  Low income residential areas are in Ward 5, 13 and 14.  Ward Nos. 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12  wards are medium income residential areas.  Ward 1, 6 and 15 are high income residential areas.

Education medical and other facilities

There are one Govt Higher Secondary School, One Govt High School, Six Govt Primary School and one private Matriculation School in this Town Panchayat.  Four private Hospitals and one Maternity Centre having bedding 3 Nos.  One Nationalized banks and one Co-operative Bank are doing in this Town Panchayat.  There are five burial fords in this town for various communities of people.
