கொடுமுடி பேரூராட்சியில் உள்ள கொடுமுடி ஒரு கோவில் நகரமாகும். இதனால் இங்கு பக்தர்களும், சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளும் அதிகம் வருகை தருகின்றனர். கொடுமுடியின் மையப்பகுதியில் காவிரி நதிக்கரையில் மேற்குப் பக்கமாக ஸ்ரீமகுடேஸ்வரர் திருக்கோவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இக்கோவில் புராதண காலத்தில் திருப்பாண்டிக் கொடுமுடி என இருந்து வந்தது, பக்தர்களால் மருகி கொடுமுடி என அழைக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இது மும்மூர்த்திகளும் மையம் கொண்ட புனித தலமாகும். கொடுமுடியாகிய இத்தலத்திற்கு பிரமன் வழிபட்டதால் பிரமபுரி என்றும், திருமால் பூசித்ததால் அரிகரபுரம் என்றும், கருடன் பூசித்து தேவலோகம் சென்று அமுதம் கொண்டு வந்ததால் அமுதபுரி என்றும், கன்மாடன் என்னும் வேதியன் வழிபட்டு வயிற்றிலுள்ள களங்கம் நீங்கப் பெற்றதால் கன்மாடபுரம் கறையூர், கறைசை என்றும் மலையத்துவச பாண்டியன் இத்தலத்தில் திருப்பணி செய்து நகரமைத்து விழாச் செய்து சிறப்புச் செய்ததால் திருப்பாண்டிக் கொடுமுடி என்றும், சிவன் இங்கு பரத்துவாசருக்கு நடனக் காட்சி அளித்ததால் பரத்துவாச சேத்திரம் என்றும் பெயர்கள் ஏற்பட்டன மேரு மலையின் ஒரு துண்டு வைரமணியாக இவ்விடத்தில் விழுந்து பெருஞ்சிகரமாகவும், அதுவே மூலலிங்கமாகவும் அமைந்ததால் கொடுமுடிக்கு தென்கைலாயம் என்றும் பெயர்கள் அமைந்தன என்பர். கொடுமுடி காவிரி ஆற்றில் தீர்த்தக் காவடி எடுத்து பழனிக்கு செல்லும் ஏராளமான முருக பக்தர்கள் இக்கோவிலுக்கு தவறாது வருகை தந்து தரிசித்து செல்வார்கள்.
