TOWN PROFILE

1.1  TOWN HISTORY

Vengarai, Town Panchayat, is located in the Velur Jedarpalayam Main Road Form Velur 8 Km here in Namakkal District. It is located at a distance of 32 Kilo metres South of Namakkal Town and at a distance of 16 Kilometres from Pugalur which is the nearest Railway Station. The town is well connected by Bus-routes with adjoining urban centres namely Salem, Madurai - Road, and Adjoining to Jedarpalayam Velur Road at Distance of 8 Kilo metres. The Population of the town Panchayat as per 2011 census was 9330.  The Tourist Place is Kolli Hills, Thiruchangodu Arthanareaswarar Temple.  

1.2  TOWN ADMINISTRATION

            Vengarai Town Panchayat was constituted First Grade Town Panchayat. The extent of the Town Panchayat  is  6.50 Sq.K.M.  The population of the  Town Panchayat is  9330  as per 2011  census, consisting 4565 men and 4765 women.

            The town was delineated to 15 Administration wards.  The Urban local Body elections were held on 25.10.2011 for the posts of Chairman and 15 Town Panchayat Councillors.

1.1.2 POLITICAL WING

            The Town Panchayat council the Political arm of the Town Panchayat consists of 15 elected councilors each representing a ward.  The Chairman heads Town Panchayat council which performs its duties as per the provisions of the District Municipalities Act 1920.  The Political wing provides direction to the Town Panchayat and performs its functions through a set of committees constituted for different purposes.

 1.1.3 EXECUTIVE WING

             The Executive wing is responsible for day to day operations of the Town Panchayat and is headed by the Executive Officer.  The Executive Officer is the Administrative head of the Town Panchayat functional department.

1.1.4 FUNCTIONAL DEPARTMENTS

            Vengarai Town Panchayat consists of Three functional departments.  Each department consists of Head who reports to the Executive Officer and functions as per the responsibilities prescribed in the Act and as delegated by the Executive Officer.

             The Town Panchayat council has adopted citizen’s charter for its various functions and to provide efficient and prompt civil services to the citizens.  According to the content of the charter, the Town Panchayat functions are transparent, accountable and responsiveness to the citizens of the town.

 1.3 LOCATION

Vengarai  is Located at a distance of 8 Kilometers South West of Salem on the Salem – Namakkal Highway.

1.4 TRANSPORT LINKAGE

The State Highway connects this town with other areas with the road network.  The major corridiors are

I) Vengarai     -           Namakkal

II) Vengarai    -           Velur

III) Vengarai    -           Jedarpalayam

1.5 CLIMATE CONDITION

         The temperature here is moderate throughout the year except during summer.  The average rainy day are 39 in a year.  It is exceptionally dry and its rainfall is scanty, uncertain and not well distributed.

1.6 SOIL CONDITION

    Vengarai Comprises Three revenue villages namely   " Pandamangalam,  A.Vengarai, S.Vengarai " and these villages are having three different types of soils viz. red earth, Clay.  The major portion is covered by black cotton red then comes red sand and black loam.  In general, the soil in and around the town is of fertile nature and is good for agriculture purposes.

            The Main Occupation of Vengarai Town Panchayat population is Agriculture.  Nearly 96.50% of the working population are engaged in Agriculture activities.  The remaining 3.50% of workers are engaged in non-agriculture.
