INTRODUCTION OF THE TOWN PANCHAYAT

 Location

     Thenkarai Town Panchayat is located on foot of the Western Ghats. The famous "Poondi Vellingiri Andavar Temple" and "Poondi Isha Yoga Center" and "Karunya Bethstha" pilgrims are situated nearly 17 K.M. from this Town Panchayat. Visiting places such as Kovai Kutrallam and Siruvani Dam at a Distance of 8 K.M. and 18 K.M. from the Town respectively. The population of the town was 7349 in 2011.  There are number of substantial riots living in this town. The total revenue of the Town Depends agriculture.

 Physical characteristics:

     The climate of the town has a low temperature and a high degree of humility. The climate is Chill in many parts of the year. Even though not subjected to extremes of climate between Maximum and Minimum temperature is only moderate and the variations in temperature from day to night is little and give relief from sweltering heat.

        The annual Maximum temperature is 32.70C and Maximum temperature is 240. The highest temperature of 39.30c occurs in the Month of April and lowest temperature of 16.70C occurs in the month of February. The average rain fall for the town is above 27cms. The bulk of which is collected during the South – west monsoon period (i.e) from June to October. The total number of rainy days in a year ranges from 70 to 95 days an average. There are rain during summer also (March to May) best such Occasion of rainfall are few and for in between.

 ECONOMIC BASIS AND EMPLOYMENT

    Economy of Thenkarai Town is mainly based on agriculture. Agriculture activities according to 2011 census are 42.61 % of the workers in the town are engaged in agriculture activities like cultivation of Coconut tree and plantaination of   sugar cane. House hold industries 13.48 % to the total workers engaged in multi various activities.

CLIMATE CONDITION

The temperature here is moderate throughout the year except during winter.  The average rainy days are 50 in a year.

 SOIL CONDITION

    This Village is having three different types of soils viz. black cotton, hard rock red, Morambu. One third portion is covered by black cotton then comes red sand and hard rock.    In general, One third of the town profile, the soil in and around the town is of fertile nature and is good for agriculture purposes.
